Anti-ICE protests near the Super Bowl grow

The anti-ICE protest not far from Levi's Stadium has already grown into the hundreds, now entirely blocking both lanes of traffic on Mission College Boulevard.

People trying to get through in vehicles are not happy. Drivers have been forced to turn around. Some are laying on the horns. It's testy but not yet adversarial. Some police have arrived, and officers are gathering in the area.

No surprises in inactive players listed by Seahawks, Patriots

There were no surprises for either team.

The Patriots other inactives included: Efton Chism III, C.J. Dippre, Marcus Bryant, Caedan Wallace, Bradyn Swinson and Kobee Minor.

Seattle's inactives were third-string QB Jalen Milroe, Robbie Ouzts, Chazz Surratt, Jared Ivey, Mason Richman, Nick Kallerup and Brandon Pili.

Big Bunny, Brandi Carlile are the real Super Bowl stars

For some, Sam Darnold and Drake Maye aren't the headliners here at Levi's Stadium.

Bay Area pals Denise Dettore, 51, and Natalie Owsley, 45, scored Super Bowl tickets, but not for the football. Instead, they're here for the Benito Bowl with the halftime show featuring Bad Bunny and a pregame performance by Brandi Carlile.

Owsley was disappointed by the blowback against Bad Bunny's selection but hopes the show will bring the six-time Grammy winner rave reviews.

"I would actually rather focus on the positive of the whole situation and what he represents," she said. "He is unapologetically authentic, and he doesn't change who he is. He's all about inclusivity and love and happiness, and we should all be for that, right?"

Team Fluff wins Puppy Bowl XXII

The "cutest showdown in sports" ended with Team Fluff defeating Team Ruff.

The Puppy Bowl, which aired on Animal Planet ahead of the actual Super Bowl, welcomed 150 dogs from 72 shelters across the United States, including Puerto Rico, and the British Virgin Islands.

Sportscasters Steve Levy and Taylor Rooks called the event, with referee Dan Schachner wrangling the pups (sorry, players).

The furry athletes were also up for adoption, with viewers encouraged to help them find their forever homes.

Magical week for cancer survivor, Patriots fan

Even after Ashleigh Kaplan's brother bought her Super Bowl tickets, the New Hampshire native wasn't sure she'd make the big game — as she was undergoing treatment at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Then came the good news — just days ago, she was told she was in remission. The breast cancer survivor was suddenly headed for Northern Calfornia.

"I didn't know if we ever thought we'd be in good enough spirits to come all the way to California for this," said Kaplan, whose husband just happens to be a Seattle Seahawks fan. "And we got it all cleared at the last second."

There's a supersized special at the site of this year's Super Bowl. This $180 cheeseburger features a braised bone-in beef shank, roasted mirepoix demi-glace and Point Reyes bleu cheese fondue on a baked brioche bun.

The stadium will be serving only 200 of these delicacies today. Jason Kelce already took a bite out of this super burger ahead of the big game, and he says it's his kind of sandwich.

Jon Gruden recalls Oakland's past

Former NFL head coach Jon Gruden took a stroll down memory lane in Oakland last week, paying tribute to the town where champions once played.

Gruden, who won a Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaners, walked the grounds of Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, where he once coached the Raiders in two stints.

The Coliseum and the neighboring Oakland Arena were once a hub of American sports greats as the Raiders, the Athletics and the Warriors, all of which won titles for the East Bay.

North America's four major sports leagues have all vacated Oakland, with the Raiders and the Athletics leaving in recent years for Las Vegas.

Overtime advice from mathletes: Take the ball first; don't kick

Davidson College applied mathematician Tim Chartier and student Ellis Sriram ran 1,000 overtime simulations and concluded that offense-first is the best strategy.

There were 14 OT games in the 2025 regular season, and the possession-first teams went 7-6-1. The team that kicked off lost both overtime games of the playoffs.

And in their 1,000 simulations, using some commonense OT logic, the team that started the fifth period on offense won 523 times, the mathematicians said.

“The fallacy [of going on defense first] is that it gives you a false sense of control,” Sriram said. “It’s much easier when you know exactly what you have to do, right? It takes a lot of the pressure off of the coaches. The players have a clear goal in mind, and you’re going all out.

“When you know you need a touchdown, that doesn’t become any easier to score a touchdown,” Sriram added.

Can Drake Maye get his mojo back?

Patriots quarterback Drake Maye became an MVP candidate while leading all qualified passers in completion percentage. In only his second season, he has become adept at protecting the ball, as well, committing multiple turnovers in only three games.

The playoffs have been a different story, however, with Maye responsible for five turnovers while completing 55.8% of his passes. To put that in perspective, he completed less than 60% of his passes in just one of his 17 regular-season games.

Maye also could be dealing with injury; he was listed on the team's injury report as a limited participant in practice because of his right throwing shoulder.

But for all of his struggles throwing, Maye has been superb as a runner, with 66 rushing yards in the wild-card win against the Chargers and 65 rushing yards, including a touchdown, against Denver, when snowy conditions turned passing into a no-win proposition.

Are you ready for some (extra) football?

New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel and Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald both declined to say whether they’d kick off or go on offense if the score were tied after four quarters.

A tie score at the end of the game means overtime, when both teams will get the chance to possess the ball.

The first 50 Super Bowls ended after 60 minutes, but two of the last nine title needed extra time to settle.

“We have conversations, and we’ll continue to talk about it,” said a noncommittal Vrabel. “A lot of this depends on their kickoff return, where the ball goes on touchbacks, how good the field goal kickers are. There’s just a lot that goes into it.”

Macdonald also declined to reveal the team's offense- or defense-first plans, though his track record already speaks for itself. When his Seahawks and the Los Angeles Rams were tied after 60 minutes in Week 16, Seattle won the OT coin toss and elected to kick.

Macdonald left the door open for going on offense first if today’s game goes into OT.

“We have our philosophy on how we want to handle overtime,” he said. “There’s some variables that change from game to game, and so we kind of leave that breathing room for us on how we want to go.”

Taylor Swift up in the Super Bowl bleachers? Not likely

Taylor Swift has been to consecutive Super Bowls to cheer on boyfriend Travis Kelce, but a three-peat doesn't seem to be in the cards.

While Kelce was spotted at Super Bowl-related events in the Bay Area last week, there has been no sighting of his world-famous fiancée.

Kelce even said on his sister-in-law's podcast this week that he has been assigned by Swift to keep track of everyone he has met during Super Bowl week and spill tea to her later — a not-so-subtle hint that she won't be at Levi's Stadium today.

Back at the 2024 Super Bowl in Las Vegas, Swift famously boarded a jet from Tokyo on a Saturday night to fly across the planet to see Kelce and the Kansas Chiefs in their OT win over the San Francisco 49ers on Super Sunday.

The Chiefs failed to make the playoffs this season, so this will be the first Super Bowl since 2022 without Kansas City on one of the sidelines.

Swift has had plenty to keep her busy in recent times between her obsession with bread, planning a wedding and dropping a new "Opalite" video.

Sam Darnold, a well-traveled quarterback

Have you heard the news that Sam Darnold has made his first Super Bowl while playing on his fifth team? It's one of the dominant storylines of the week, after the former No. 3 overall pick in 2018 has resurrected his career after second (and third, and fourth...) chances.

But research by NBC Sports lays out just how rare it is for such a late-career breakthrough. Darnold joins Chris Chandler (Atlanta Falcons) and Earl Morrall (Baltimore Colts) as the only quarterbacks to make the Super Bowl on their fifth team or later.

In Seattle’s 31-27 win over the Rams in the NFC championship game, Darnold threw for 346 yards and three touchdowns with no turnovers — the type of performance in a high-stakes game that, given the way he was traded, released and given up on by his four previous teams, few believed Darnold was capable of during his winding, eight-year path through the NFL.

“You can’t talk about the game without talking about our quarterback,” Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said. “He just shut a lot of people up tonight, so I’m really happy for him.”

San Francisco steals super spotlight, as usual

For the geographically challenged, San Francisco’s famed Transamerica Pyramid and the Golden Gate Bridge are a solid hour's drive from the site of Super Bowl 60 in Santa Clara.

The moniker attached to today’s big game, the “San Francisco Bay Area Super Bowl,” has mildly irked swaths of this nine-county, 7.5 million-resident region, where non-415 locals have long chafed over automatic association with the region’s famed city of cable cars and sourdough bread

“So that’s their choice to do that. I can’t speak to that being right or wrong,” said diplomatic Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce CEO Harbir Kaur Bhatia, biting her tongue when asked about San Francisco-heavy imagery of the Super Bowl logo. “All I can say is I hope that we’ll showcase what the Silicon Valley has to offer, to be an equally good choice and sometimes better for the [NFL] visitor due to our proximity of Levi’s Stadium.”

A bulk of cultural events attached to the Super Bowl were staged in San Francisco, where the hometown 49ers played last played in 2013. The Niners left Candlestick Park for Levi's — but kept the name “San Francisco.”

Pats' Mike Vrabel named NFL coach of the year

One of the surprise's of the NFL season was the Patriots' turnaround. After going 4-13 in 2024, New England fired its coach and hired Mike Vrabel, who had previously played linebacker for the Patriots during the Bill Belichick era. The move had immediate dividends: New England went 14-3 this season and is now playing in the Super Bowl.

On Thursday, the NFL named Mike Vrabel coach of the year.

Vrabel had previously coached the Tennessee Titans, where he went 54-45 over six seasons. He's considered a great in-game coach, who creates advantages in the margins, like on substitution patterns and managing the clock.

Trump predicts a 'great' game, does not reveal his pick to win

With kickoff just hours away, President Donald Trump predicted a "great" Super Bowl in a video message posted by the White House on social media.

“I have a feeling this is going to be a great Super Bowl. I’ve watched all season. I’ve seen these two teams just win, win, win,” said the president, seated behind the Resolute Desk.

The video comically cuts out just as Trump is about the reveal who he’s picked to win the game.

The president is not attending the Super Bowl this year. He was the first sitting U.S. president to do so last year, but this year will instead attend a watch party in Palm Beach, Florida.

“It’s just too far away,” he told the New York Post. In that same interview, he criticized Green Day and Bad Bunny, who are both set to perform tonight.

“I’m anti-them. I think it’s a terrible choice,” he told the publication. “All it does is sow hatred.”

Tom Brady left in 2020. Until this season, the Patriots hadn’t been in the playoffs since Jan. 15, 2022, when the Bills — who had lost 15 consecutive times to Belichick’s Patriots over one eight-year stretch — routed New England by 30.

“I was enjoying seeing them struggle," Ariel Helwani, a sports commentator, told NBC News last year. "I was enjoying seeing them drown a little bit. I was enjoying seeing them have losing seasons and being a little bit dysfunctional. It was all very nice and I was hoping for a few more years of it.”

Waymo added that safety is a foremost priority and it's using recent events to help it learn.

Defensive storyline to watch: Can Ernest Jones IV and Seattle's defense contain Drake Maye's scrambling?

Can linebacker Ernest Jones IV and the Seattle defense keep Drake Maye in the pocket? Maye has shown he’s a threat to scramble. In the AFC championship game, he ran 10 times for 65 yards and sealed the game on a QB keeper in the snow.

Jones is an active, athletic linebacker in the center of the Seattle defense, who’s often asked to drop back into coverage. If Seattle can pressure Maye, and keep him from scrambling, it could be a long night for the young Patriots’ quarterback.

Tom Brady shares his Super Bowl prediction with Kendall Jenner

Kendall Jenner "doesn't really know a ton about football."

But she does know Tom Brady. During an appearance on "The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon," the reality TV star and model called the former NFL star to get his advice on who will win today.

Jenner's appearance coincided with her promotion around a Super Bowl ad for the sports betting site Fanatics Sportsbook.

"Look, I think this Seattle defense, they're all-time," he said over a Facetime that aired on the show. "They can get pressure with four. It lets them drop seven guys into coverage. They can cover all day long. Six different guys did over 20 miles per hour at some point during the year. And you guys know Nick Emmanwori, right Kendall?"

At the end of the call, Jenner said she is going to pick the team she described as the "underdog": the New England Patriots.

Rhamondre Stevenson happily went to work at 4-13

College taught New England Patriots running back Rhamondre Stevenson a valuable lesson — in losing.

Before this year’s Super Bowl run, Stevenson played on three consecutive sub-.500 New England teams, including consecutive 4-13 campaigns.

But the five-year veteran said he never lost his passion for football thanks in large part to a two-year stint at Cerritos College, a regular winner in Southern California juco circles that went just 10-11 in Stevenson’s time there in 2017 and 2018.

“We were losing games [at Cerritos], so I knew what losing felt like for sure,” Las Vegas native Stevenson told NBC News. “They [the losing seasons with Pats] were rough. But I enjoy football and I enjoy who I come to work with. So I really didn’t have a problem still coming to work and competing with my brothers. I love the staff, I love my teammates.”

The key to Drake Maye's success? Being a little brother

In sports, some siblings are so accomplished that they can be recognized by only their surnames. The Manning brothers. The Williams sisters. In North Carolina, they have the Mayes: four brothers who are all strong athletes, born within about 5 ½ years.

Luke, the oldest, played basketball at the University of North Carolina and made the shot that sent the Tar Heels to the 2017 Final Four. Cole, the next brother, pitched at the University of Florida and won the College Baseball World Series. Beau, the third brother, also played basketball for the Tar Heels.

Then there’s Drake, the youngest. By his own description, he was the “runt” of the family. His brothers all grew to be around 6 feet, 7 inches, 6-8. Drake stopped a few inches shy of that. He was the “instigator,” the one who tried to get under the others’ skin.

“I was getting beat up on,” Drake once said. “Luckily, I was the most athletic, so I could run away. They couldn’t catch me.”

Historic day for Super Bowl mass transit

The ground game will play a key role at — or rather in and out of — the Super Bowl.

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority expects about 25,000 light rail trips to the big game, with about 12,500 people going in and 12,500 exiting Levi’s Stadium.

This could make for the second biggest rail-to-Super Bowl day in the big game’s history, following the 2014 championship clash when New Jersey Transit rolled 28,000 fans into MetLife Stadium and 35,000 out of the Seattle Seahawks' 43-8 win over the Denver Broncos.

Today's game should top VTA’s current Levi’s Stadium high mark, when it provided 24,986 one-way rail trips for Taylor Swift’s show on July 28, 2023, the agency said.

An X-factor to watch: Patriots' defensive tackle Milton Williams

Milton Williams

New England Patriots defensive end Milton Williams. Brynn Anderson / AP

Keep an eye on Patriots defensive tackle Milton Williams. His two sacks of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes in last year’s Super Bowl earned Williams a championship and a big contract in free agency from the Patriots, who hoped he could reprise that protection-busting role again for them in big games. He’s played very well in the postseason while being challenged by coach Mike Vrabel.

Pressuring Darnold has caused him to play erratically throughout his career, though less so this season. If the Patriots want to disrupt Seattle, which doesn’t have much of a run game, it needs to happen in the pass rush.

U.S. hockey will be sleeping during Super Bowl

Here in Milan, it’s not Super Bowl Sunday. It’s Super Bowl Monday.

Because of the nine-hour time difference between Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, and the Milan Cortina Olympics, there aren’t many athletes willing to stay up to catch a game that won’t kick off until after midnight local time.

The U.S. women’s hockey team, which plays Monday, certainly won’t be. Coach John Wroblewski shook his head quickly when told of the kickoff time.

“Most of our bedtimes are 9:30 or 10 (p.m.), so I really don’t think we’ll have to worry about it,” U.S. forward Taylor Heise said. “We are big football fans. I know Laila Edwards obviously, is a Travis Kelce fan, she keeps us up to date, but we’re here to play hockey. So I think at the end of the day, everyone’s gonna do their best to be at their best.”

Defenseman Megan Keller played at Boston College and now is part of the PWHL’s Boston Fleet.

“I’ll be rooting for the Pats,” Keller said, “but I think we’ll be finding out the score in the morning.”

The four people who have attended all 59 Super Bowls will be back

Four people have attended all 59 Super Bowls, and all four of them are in San Francisco to attend Super Bowl 60 today.

Three of the four are fans and old friends Don Crisman, Gregory Eaton and Tom Henschel, who have been calling themselves the “Never Missed a Super Bowl Club,” and were featured in a Super Bowl commercial for Visa in 2010. Two of the fans featured in that commercial have since died, but Crisman, Eaton and Henschel are still alive and still going to the Super Bowl every year.

One other person, photographer John Biever, has taken pictures at all 59 Super Bowls and will do so again. Biever’s father, Vernon Biever, was a photographer for the Packers who brought his son with him to help out at Super Bowl I. John Biever was 16 years old at the time and has been a professional photographer since, working for many media outlets, primarily Sports Illustrated.

The NFL makes face-value tickets available to Crisman, Eaton and Henschel for every Super Bowl, and provides a photojournalist’s credential to Biever.

Seattle Seahawks favored in today's big game

America's gamblers have pegged the NFC champs as 4.5-point favorites in a game that is expected to include a touch over 45 points.

The game line and over/under bet on total points scored have remained relatively stable since Seattle and New England won their conference title games.

There’s some form of legal sports betting in 39 states and the District of Columbia. There's no legal sports gambling here in California, but prediction markets have found their way into the Golden State as a reasonable facsimile.

After backlash from fans, Tom Brady shows support for Kraft, Patriots

New England Patriots legend Tom Brady has taken a ton of heat this week for saying “I don’t have a dog in this fight” when asked who he was backing in Sunday’s Super Bowl matchup between his former team and the Seattle Seahawks.

It seems he must have heard the backlash, as he shared an image of him with Patriots owner Robert Kraft on his Instagram Stories on Friday night, saying: “You know I got your back RKK” and “Get that 7th ring so we can match.”

He followed it up with a second photo of him, Kraft and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, adding, “I bet even Roger is rooting for you.”

Both posts also tagged the Patriots.

No matter who wins the Super Bowl, New York Jets fans lose

The Super Bowl can’t come soon enough for supporters of the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots. New York Jets fans, however, might choose to skip the game altogether.

They’ll witness one of two scenarios play out Sunday: Either their former quarterback and presumed savior of the franchise, Sam Darnold, will lead Seattle to its first NFL championship since 2014 or New England, their hated rival, will add to its stuffed trophy case.

For Jordan Kamzan, a 34-year-old from Long Beach, New York, it’s not a difficult choice.

“It could be anyone playing the Patriots,” he said, “I would be cheering for him.”

An X-factor to watch: Seattle's do-it-all defender Nick Emmanwori

Seahawks’ hybrid safety/linebacker/nickelback Nick Emmanwori is perhaps the key to this whole game.

Though only a rookie, Emmanwori’s ability to play the run and pass equally great has been the key to the Seahawks’ incredible defense. After tweaking his ankle during practice in the lead-up to the Super Bowl, Emmanwori has since been taken off the injury report, but any hitch in his game would be a boon for the Patriots.

Otherwise, Emmanwori is the kind of player who can single-handedly wreck offensive drives. New England’s No. 1 objective may be trying to neutralize what Seattle does when its defense is in a nickel package on early downs.

Here's how to watch the Super Bowl if you're not in the U.S.

There are few corners of the planet where you won't be able to watch today's big game.

Here's a guide of where to find the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots.

The NFL has been aggressively pushing its product overseas, with games regularly held outside U.S. borders. There will be six such international contests next season.

California attorney general warns of ticket scamming

California Attorney General Rob Bonta has a message for NFL fans: "Don’t fumble the ball on Super Bowl tickets!"

The official posted to X last week urging people to do their research and purchase tickets from authorized vendors.

“We all enjoy going to live shows and games to see our favorite artists or sports teams, but unfortunately scammers prey on our excitement,” Bonta said in a statement. “Today I remind Californians: If you see hawking — or suspicious ticket reselling — protect yourself by following the tips we provide. If you have fallen victim to a scam or suspect fraudulent activity, be a patriot and submit a complaint. You can file a report with my office at oag.ca.gov/report as well as the Better Business Bureau and the FBI’s Internet Complaint Center.”

Malcolm Butler: Forever linked to Patriots-Seahawks Super Bowl

Retired cornerback Malcolm Butler said his circle of friends — and even his family tree — have inexplicably grown over the past 11 years.

Perhaps it’s due to his famed interception on Feb. 1, 2015, stealing a Super Bowl trophy for his New England Patriots and sending Seattle Seahawks fans into despair.

The play made for a cherished lifetime memory, put Butler on long-term financial security and, as he put it in an interview with the Patriots website: “You got new cousins, you got new friends!”

This Massachusetts family hasn’t missed a Patriots Superbowl

A father and daughter from Bellingham, Massachusetts, have been to every New England Patriots Super Bowl, and they are back this year — with a third generation in tow.

The Murray family duo has not missed a Super Bowl that New England has been in, including the six it won in 2002, 2004, 2005, 2015, 2017 and 2019.

John Murray started this tradition when his daughter, Shayna, was a kid.

“I’ve been a season-ticket holder since 1971,” he explained to NBC10 Boston. “In 1986, we made the Super Bowl, she was 7 years old.”

This Super Bowl will be the 12th for Shayna and John Murray, and they have a new team member with them — almost-7-year-old Savanna.

Drake Maye narrowly misses out on MVP award

On Thursday, the NFL announced that Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford had won the league's MVP award. But he just barely edged out the Patriots' Drake Maye in the closest MVP race since 2003, when Peyton Manning and Steve McNair shared the award. Here's how this year's voting broke down:

Stafford: 366 total points, 24 first-place votes

Maye: 361 total points, 23 first-place votes

There were three other first-place votes that went to other players: the Bills' Josh Allen (2) and the Chargers' Justin Herbert (1).

How Sam Darnold went from NFL castoff to Super Bowl QB

About a decade ago, the last time the Seahawks and Patriots played in the Super Bowl, Michael Gervais stood on the Seattle sideline as the final moments played out: the Seahawks marching downfield, Malcolm Butler’s shocking interception, Seattle left slack-jawed as New England celebrated.

Gervais isn’t a player or a coach. He’s a performance psychologist. After that game, he played an important role: helping the Seahawks process the gut-wrenching loss. Gervais had been hired a few years prior by Pete Carroll, then the Seahawks’ head coach, who believed in developing players mentally, not just physically, at a time when sports psychology wasn’t as mainstream.

“He made it part of the water we were drinking,” Gervais told NBC News. “It was part of the air we were breathing. It was embedded through the culture.”

This season, the Seahawks’ culture had a new project: the redemption of quarterback Sam Darnold.

The FAA reminds pilots: the Super Bowl is a no-drone zone

The Federal Aviation Administration reminded Bay Area drone pilots that flying near Levi’s Stadium could cost them.

The agency posted a notice to X that included a map of the restricted zone. The temporary flight restriction will begin this morning and runs until after the game. The post came with a warning that violators could face fines.

Patriots looking for seventh ring — but first without Tom Brady

The Pats might have their "Eyes on 7," but the number in mind here might really be one, as in the number of titles they hope to have without Tom Brady on the field.

The team's six titles all came between 2002 and 2019 with TB12 under center.

With Drake Maye calling the signals today, this will be New England's second Super Bowl appearance without Brady in charge. The 1985-86 squad that lost to the powerful Chicago Bears in the Super Bowl were led by Steve Grogan.

On Thursday, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Seattle's top wide receiver, was named NFL offensive player of the year. In his third season out of Ohio State, Smith-Njigba emerged as a bona fide star, catching 119 passes for 1,793 yards and 10 touchdowns. His precise route-running set him apart; he always seemed to get open.

In the playoffs, Smith-Njigba has elevated his play even more. In the NFC championship game, a close win over the Rams, he caught 10 passes for 153 yards and a touchdown.

Rare matchup, by the rankings

Since the NFL-AFL merger in 1970, a Super Bowl has never featured two opponents that both rank in the top four in both scoring offense and how many points they allow on defense. Until this year.

The Seahawks rank third offensively (28.4 points per game) and first defensively (17.2 allowed).

The Patriots are a tick better offensively, ranking second at 28.8 points per game, while allowing 18.8 points (fourth).

Sam Darnold's journey to gridiron came via hardwood

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold will be playing on his sport’s biggest stage — and he might have basketball to thank for it?

In an age of sports specialization, with elite young athletes being increasingly pushed to concentrate on just one craft, Darnold said putting down the pigskin in favor of the roundball every winter played a key role in his development.

His tape as a basketball player at San Clemente High School in California helped draw interest from USC football recruiters, who were impressed with his overall athleticism.

“I feel like playing multiple sports was huge for me,” the 6-foot-3 Darnold told reporters at the team's headquarters in San Jose. “I loved playing basketball. I always say basketball was kind of my first love, especially being close to L.A. and [late basketball legend] Kobe [Bryant] being a huge inspiration.”

He added: “So yeah, I love basketball and I’m just grateful that USC saw that film and was able to offer me [a scholarship] for football.”
