German duo Minerva Fabienne Hase and Nikita Volodin finished in first place in today's pairs skating short program event. They finished with a score of 80.01, a personal best that allowed them to easily take the lead in the last routine of the competition.

Deanna Stellato-Dudek has major fall in last moments of today's figure skating competition
Canadian figure skater Deanna Stellato-Dudek delivered a stunning routine today during her Olympic debut before she fell in the final seconds of the pairs skating short program routine.
Partner Maxime Deschamps was unraveling Stellato from a lift when she fell, costing the pair 5 points. They finished with a score of 66.04 and are in 11th place.
It was a devastating fall for the world champion figure skater, who made a major comeback in 2016 after having retired. Nevertheless, Stellato competed today as the oldest female figure skater to take the Olympic ice in nearly 100 years.
USA scores again for 3-0 lead against Germany
Team USA has scored again, giving itself a comfortable 3-0 lead against Germany in the last few minutes of the second period.

Team USA honors former teammate killed by alleged drunk driver, hangs his jersey in locker room
It has been an exciting run so far for Team USA's men's ice hockey team at the Olympics, but one person's absence has been notable for the players.
Johnny Gaudreau, the former Columbus Blue Jackets winger, was killed by an alleged drunk driver alongside his brother in 2024 while the two men were in New Jersey for their sister's wedding weekend. Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski told NBC Philadelphia that he knew how excited Gaudreau was at the prospect of playing at the Olympics this year.
"I know how bad he wanted this," Werenski said. "He played at a number of world championships hoping for a chance for best-on-best, and he's probably a guy who would have been here."
But Gaudreau is there in spirit as the team hangs his jersey in its locker room. Werenski, who scored first in today's game against Germany, says they're playing for him.
Ellie Kam and Danny O’Shea in fourth place after delivering dreamy pair skating routine
American pairs skating duo Ellie Kam and Danny O'Shea floated across the ice in today's short program, finishing with a score of 71.87. They are in fourth place.
They competed with intricate choreography to a cover of "Hallelujah," nailing their jumps and finishing with a huge lift that had Kam sailing through the air as O'Shea waltzed across the ice.
Auston Matthews parks in front of net, scores Team USA's second goal
Early in the second period, Quinn Hughes launched the puck toward the German net, which Auston Matthews had positioned himself in front of. With all that action in front of the goalie, the puck ended up in the net.
"U-S-A, U-S-A" chants rang out in the arena. The Americans now lead Germany 2-0. There's about 15 minutes left in the second period.
U.S. scores late in the first period, leads Germany 1-0
In the final seconds of the first period, Team USA's Auston Matthews made a smooth cross-ice pass to the backside of the German defense, to Zach Werenski, who ripped a shot past the goalie.
At the first intermission, the U.S. leads 1-0 and is outshooting the Germans 15-8.
Until that point, Germany had been playing the U.S. tough. This German team features several NHL players, including forward Leon Draisaitl. Both Team USA and Germany have a chance to win Group C, depending on the outcome of this game. That would mean a bye into the quarterfinals.
Midway through first period, U.S. and Germany still scoreless
Team USA is outshooting Germany 10-3, but still no goals for either side. Chants of "U-S-A, U-S-A" broke out at the arena, as fans tried to urge on some action. There's less than eight minutes remaining in the first period.
U.S. hockey about to play Germany in final prelim game
The American team is 2-0 in the preliminary round so far. If Team USA beats Germany, it would earn a bye to the quarterfinals. The U.S. beat Denmark yesterday, 6-3, after overcoming a deficit at the first intermission.

Federica Brignone, coming back from violent crash last year, says just making the Olympics has been 'an achievement'

Italian Alpine ski racer Federica Brignone won giant slalom gold today after sitting out most of the season due to a major injury. How did Brignone nab her second gold medal of these Olympic Games? The ski racer says it's because she was just happy to be here this time.
The five-time Olympic medalist returned to competition after she broke her leg in multiple places and tore her ACL during a violent crash at the Italian Championships last year. Recovery, she says, "was painful all the time."
"Actually, I was just happy to be at the Olympics. For me, it was an achievement, like something special, and that’s why I think I won, because I was just happy already and grateful to be here," Brignone told NBC News correspondent Molly Hunter after the competition.
Today, she won gold in her home country, racing across the finish line with the noise of the roaring Italian crowd in the background. Their cheers, Brignone said, made her realize she had won.
"I discovered that I won because the crowd just, I felt them a lot, and then I turned around and I saw No. 1," she said.
Figure skating pairs short program is underway
The figure skating pairs short program competition has begun. Team USA has two pairs competing: Emily Chan and Spencer Akira Howe will go fifth, and Ellie Kam and Danny O’Shea will be the 14th pair.
The free skate portion of the competition will take place tomorrow.

American duo Mystique Ro and Austin Florian were briefly in first place before being pushed to seventh.
Olympic dreams finally come true for 42-year-old figure skater Deanna Stellato-Dudek
Deanna Stellato-Dudek will make her Olympic debut today when she competes for Canada in the pairs figure skating event. She will also be making history as the oldest female figure skater to take the Olympic ice in nearly 100 years.

The figure skater retired from skating for 16 years before returning to the sport in 2016. At age 40, she became the oldest woman to win a world title in figure skating. Today, she'll be making her Olympic dreams come true at 42 years old.
In a sport typically dominated by younger skaters, Stellato-Dudek believes age is just a number.
“I always think that my age provides me with a power,” she said ahead of her Olympic run. “The only thing that it maybe would slow down is that I have to put more work into just showing up the next morning than my 20-year-old counterpart with my recovery, my diet and my exercise.”
Stellato-Dudek almost didn't make it. She was injured during practice ahead of this year's Games and had to stay behind for medical evaluation. She missed the team event before receiving a sign-off by the Team Canada medical staff.
Today, her decadeslong Olympic dream becomes a reality. “The realistic goal for me would have been the 2006 Olympics, which ironically were also in Italy,” Stellato said, referencing Turin 2006. “So it’s very crazy that 20 years later I am going back to the country that I would have most likely been attending the Olympics in if I had stayed a singles skater.”
Canadian men's hockey beats France in landslide win
Team Canada crushed the French team 10-2 in today's preliminary men's hockey game. Canada will head into the knockout round undefeated.

Jake Paul has carved out a name for himself as a boxer in the U.S., but his fiancée, Jutta Leerdam, is perhaps an even bigger star in the Netherlands, where speedskating is a national obsession. Fans in the national orange color have packed the speedskating arena every session here in Milan.
After winning a gold in the 1,000 meters and silver in the 500 meters Leerdam, 27 and still in her prime, told NBC News "we will see" if she plans to qualify for the 2030 Winter Olympics, however.
She also said that Paul has become quite knowledgeable about her sport.
"He knows a lot now because I try to teach him everything, so when I'm talking with him and I need advice for something, he can actually give me advice," Leerdam said. "Which is still hard, of course, because the sport is so hard to understand, but I just want him to really understand what I'm saying."
"So now he knows a lot. It's great. He was even one of the first ones in the 1,000 meter that knew I was going to be Olympic champion. We have a video of it, the moment that he was like, 'She's going to win!' When everybody else didn't realize it yet because he looks at the kilometers per hour, and everything. So, he knows."
U.S. mixed doubles skeleton duo shoots to first place
Mystique Ro and Austin Florian completed the mixed doubles skeleton race with a time of 2:00.39, which brought them to the first-place rank in today's competition.
There are 15 pairs still left to compete.

After Erin Jackson finished fifth in today's speedskating 500-meter final, she skated over to Femke Kok, who'd won gold, and patted her back in congratulations. “We’re all friends out there," Jackson later told NBC News.
In fact, Jackson said she relished the spotlight, the pressure of top competition. She credited that for her electric start in today's race.
"I really rely on the pressure," Jackson told NBC News. "I'm typically a really calm and relaxed person, even when I'm out there competing. To have the pressure, that really helps me perform better than I usually do. I [had] the fastest opener of my life today, and I kinda owe that to the pressure, I think. Because without that, I'm just, 'Oh, it's another day.'"
Erin Jackson: 'I can't imagine stopping now'

American speedskater Erin Jackson, the 2022 gold medalist in the 500 meters, finished fifth in tonight's final, just five-hundredths of a second out of making the podium for bronze. Jackson, 33, has endured a rash of injuries and back pain since her gold medal, but told NBC News she expects to keep competing for four more years to try to qualify for the 2030 Winter Olympics.
"I can't imagine stopping now, especially with the progress I made this season," Jackson said after her race. "The last two or so years before this year were pretty rough for me. So to be able to come back from that, I mean, I can't imagine stopping with this momentum going right now."
Watch: Jutta Leerdam's silver-medal performance
The Netherlands became the first country since 1998 to claim the top two spots in the women's speedskating 500-meter final. Femke Kok had been one of the favorites, and she won gold. Jutta Leerdam, who had won gold earlier in the 1000-meter final, finished in 37.15 seconds to take silver.

Already a gold-medal winner at these Olympics, the Netherlands’ Jutta Leerdam finished her 500-meter race in 37.15 seconds, skating to a raucous crowd that included her fiancée, Jake Paul.
In the women’s speedskating final, Leerdam is now in first place with three pairs to go.

Leerdam, of the Netherlands, won speedskating gold in the women's 1,000-meter race last week while skating in the last pair, and broke an Olympic record in the process. Tonight, she will try to win her second gold of these Games in the 500-meter final, when she skates in the 12th of 15 pairs.
Erin Jackson of the U.S. will skate in the final pair, alongside Dutch star Femke Kok, and both will have the advantage of knowing the times of the rest of the field and what it will take to win.
Former IOC president Thomas Bach talks during break in speedskating
While fans wait for the ice to be reconditioned before the start of the women's speedskating 500-meter final, Bach, the IOC president from 2013-25, was interviewed by an in-arena public-address announcer. Bach said he was glad to be able to watch the Games with no responsibility anymore.
Bach, a former Belgian Olympic fencer, was also asked what he would tell the athletes competing at these Winter Olympics.
"The only way you can suggest something to them is to say never give up and enjoy the Games," he said.
At speedskating team pursuit, U.S. advances to semifinals
In team pursuit speedskating, three competitors from each country skate in an aerodynamic line, so close they literally touch one another with their hands. The top four times from quarterfinals make the semifinals, and the U.S. men — the world record holders in this event — have just now advanced with the second-fastest time. Here are the semi matchups:
- Italy vs. Netherlands
- U.S. vs. China
The semifinals will be held Tuesday.

Mikaela Shiffrin proud to have made starting gate of giant slalom after traumatic crash
It wasn't to be today for Mikaela Shiffrin in the giant slalom, but she is delighted just to have made the starting gate.

Shiffrin suffered a huge crash in a giant slalom race in Killington, Vermont, in November 2024, leaving her with a puncture wound to her abdomen and muscle trauma. Shiffrin has spoken out about struggling with PTSD following that crash, and she has struggled to get back to grips with the speed of the giant slalom, which sees skiers pick up more speed than the more technical slalom, where the gates are much closer together.
"I look back on last year in returning to racing after my injury and returning to giant slalom, I was so far off, and I didn't have a hope of being faster," Shiffrin told NBC News after her second run. "Now I'm in touch. I'm in touch with the fastest women, and I have a chance, which, for me, the biggest thing is that ability to dream."
Shiffrin will now turn her attention to Wednesday's slalom, where she has been touted as the gold-medal favorite. She has already had one competition on the slalom in these Games, surprisingly failing to be competitive as she teamed up with Breezy Johnson in the team combined event, and she has been hard at work since then to make sure all goes right in Wednesday's race.
"I practice like you can never get enough runs of training and runs of practice," Shiffrin said when asked about how she is preparing for the slalom. "The things that were particularly destabilizing on the team combined day, some of the factors within the course, I was able to go out for a training session, practice some of these things. And I had the most amazing session and moment with my team.
"I've won a lot of slalom this year, and I've won a lot of slaloms in my career. It doesn't make it easier. It doesn't make it a sure thing. It's never guaranteed."

Federica Brignone wins women's giant slalom gold for Italy
It's gold for Italy's Federica Brignone, and the crowd roars!
That is Brignone's second gold medal of these Games after having also won the super-G, and her fifth medal overall. It's been a remarkable Olympics for the "snow tiger" — she returned to competition last month after breaking her left leg in multiple places and tearing her ACL in a horrendous crash at the Italian Championships last April.
“I had a really bad accident, and I definitely came very close to not being able to be an athlete anymore — and maybe even to not being able to walk properly again,” the 35-year-old said yesterday.
Rather remarkably, Sweden's Sara Hector and Norway's Thea Stjernesund posted exactly the same time in both the first and second runs. They will share the silver medal.
We still have further skiers to go, but they all finished outside the top 30 in their first run this morning, so they won't challenge for the medals. Mikaela Shiffrin will finish in 11th place.
Mikaela Shiffrin out of the medals
That's not going to be enough for Mikaela Shiffrin. Her combined time of 2:14.42 is only good enough for sixth so far, with further skiers to come, and she is going to miss out on a medal in the women's giant slalom.
Her second run was much like her first — clean, but just not quick enough to challenge the top of the leaderboard.
There are big cheers, though, as she crosses the finish line.

Shiffrin has one more event to go at these Games, the slalom — traditionally her strongest event — on Wednesday. She is the most successful athlete in the history of slalom skiing, so she will have one final chance to avoid going medalless at a second straight Olympic Games.
Almost go time for Mikaela Shiffrin
It's almost time for Mikaela Shiffrin to go down the course in her bid for a women's giant slalom medal.
We've got two more skiers to go before Shiffrin, so we will see her in the next few minutes.

NBC News' Molly Hunter, who is at the end of the course for us, reports it's definitely getting warmer in Cortina as we approach 2 p.m. local time. That is going to make the snow a little looser and slushy, conditions that traditionally don't favor Mikaela Shiffrin.
Great Britain beats Germany 9-4 in men’s curling action
Great Britain only allowed Germany to score in two ends of Sunday’s five-point victory in round-robin play.
Mikaela Shiffrin has work to do in second run of women's giant slalom
We've just started the second runs of the women's giant slalom, with Team USA's Mikaela Shiffrin sitting in seventh place. Her run earlier was clean but not spectacular as she sits just over a second off the leading pace. The top 30 will go in reverse order based on their times earlier this morning. That means Shiffrin will be the 24th skier down the course, so expect her at around 8 a.m. ET.
Johannes Klaebo wins record-breaking ninth Winter Olympic gold
Another day, another gold medal for Norwegian superstar Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo.
Norway has won gold in the men's 4x7.5km cross-country relay, and with it, Klaebo breaks the record for the most all-time Winter Olympic gold medals with his ninth.

And there could still be more gold coming Klaebo's way in these Games.
He has two more events, and with one more gold, he will become only the second ever Olympian to hold 10 or more gold medals — Michael Phelps currently stands alone in that exclusive club.
Team USA remain in medal contention after second runs in women's monobob
Team USA will go into tomorrow's third and fourth runs in the women's monobob in second and third place, with Germany's Laura Nolte holding a narrow lead.
Kaillie Humphries had the fastest run down the course in this round with a 59.65, closing the gap between her and the lead as she jumps up the standings to third.
Elana Meyers Taylor, who has won everything but Olympic gold in bobsled, didn't have an entirely clean run. She skidded through a turn to lose time, but she still had enough to edge ahead of Humphries.

It was a run to forget for Kaysha Love. The Utah native made a rapid start, but two big hits on the wall down the course cost her a big chunk of time in this run. She drops from third to fifth in the standings and will have work to do tomorrow if she wants to claim an Olympic medal.
We're halfway through the competition, with the third and fourth runs to come tomorrow from 1 p.m. ET.

Team USA looking strong in the women's monobob after first run
It’s been a strong morning for Team USA’s bobsledders in the women’s monobob, with the U.S. sitting in second, third and fourth after the first of four runs down the course.
Elena Meyers Taylor, competing in her fifth Olympic Games, sits in second, just 0.05 seconds behind Germany's Laura Nolte. Kaysha Love, making her Olympic debut, is close behind in third, and Kaillie Humphries is in fourth.
The second runs are now getting underway, with the third and fourth runs happening tomorrow.
Klaebo goes for historic ninth gold
Norway’s Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo will look to become the first Winter Olympian to win nine career gold medals when he competes in the men’s 4x7.5km relay today.
Klaebo is one of four athletes (all Norwegian) with eight career gold medals at the Olympic Winter Games. Klaebo has won gold in all three of his events so far at these Games. This will be his first team event, with Klaebo anchoring the heavily favored Norwegian squad.
Mikael Kingsbury caps off Olympic career with gold
The greatest to ever do it in moguls. Canada's Mikael Kingsbury has already confirmed this will be his final Games, and his illustrious Olympic career is ending with gold.
The Canadian faced Japan's Ikuma Horishima in the gold-medal run of the men's dual moguls, both skiers pushing themselves to the limit. But Horishima went off balance through the moguls, bailing out of his final jump. As he crossed the line, Kingsbury collapsed to the floor in celebration as he let out his joy.

This is Kingsbury's second medal of these Games after heartbreakingly missing out on gold in the standard moguls event earlier in the Games on a tiebreaker. It's his fifth Olympic medal, the first male freeskier to ever win that many. Matt Graham of Australia won the small final to take bronze.
Brignone brings it with top time in giant slalom Run 1
After winning gold in the women’s super-G, Italy’s Federica Brignone followed it up by setting the top time in the women’s giant slalom at 1:03.23, 0.34 seconds ahead of the closest competitor.
Mikaela Shiffrin in 7th after first run of women's giant slalom
We're officially done with the first run of the women's giant slalom, with Mikaela Shiffrin sitting just over a second behind the leader after the first run, as Italy's Federica Brignone leads the field.
Shiffrin looked a little conservative in her run and is in seventh position after posting a time of 1:04.25.
Wearing her signature tiger helmet, the crowd roared as Brignone crossed the finish line to go fastest. The home favorite returned to competition less than a month ago, after recovering from a torn ACL, and her Games are shaping up to be career-defining as she chases a second gold medal in Cortina after winning the super-G on Thursday.
Germany's Lena Duerr will go into the second run narrowly behind Brignone, while another Italian, Sofia Goggia, sits in third place. The field is tightly bunched, with just over a second separating the top 10. We go again for the second runs at 7:30 a.m. ET.
Team USA beats Sweden in men's curling
Team USA's strong performance in curling at these Games continued this morning, with the men's squad beating Sweden in their round-robin matchup.

With Team USA up 8-5, Sweden forfeits the final end of the match. That result means the American side, led by skipper Daniel Casper, moves to a record of three wins and two defeats, and they remain in the hunt for a spot in the semifinals.
The team will take the ice again later today as they take on Norway at 1:05 p.m. ET.
American hopes over in the men's dual moguls as Kingsbury advances
There won't be another Team USA medal in dual moguls after both remaining Americans were knocked out in the quarterfinals.
Charlie Mickel, fresh from taking out one of the favorites, Cooper Woods, in the previous round, faced another Australian in Matt Graham this time around. But it was not to be, as Graham claimed a 20-15 win.
Dylan Walczyk has also been eliminated, comfortably beaten by Ikuma Horishima.
Canada's Mikael Kingsbury, the sport's greatest, who is chasing his fifth Olympic medal, moves on to the final four after his opponent skidded off course. The semifinals are just getting underway.

Nick Page has a brutal draw in the round of 16, up against Japan's Ikuma Horishima, who won bronze in the standard moguls event earlier in the Games. Both of them pressed hard, both falling during their runs. But Page ran out of bounds, so he is disqualified. His Olympics are over.

We do have two Americans into the final eight, though. Charlie Mickel upset the gold medalist from the moguls, Cooper Woods — with the Australian bailing out of his final jump to hand Mickel the win. Dylan Walczyk is also through and faces Horishima in the quarterfinals.
Nick Page takes to the moguls in bid for Olympic medal
The men's dual moguls are now underway, and after Jaelin Kauf and Liz Lemley medaled for Team USA in yesterday's women's event, there is hope that Nick Page, competing in his second Olympic Games, can claim a medal for the men.
Page is safely through the opening round, as is Canada's Mikael Kingsbury, widely considered to be the greatest moguls skier of all time. The round of 16 is now underway.

Dual moguls sees two skiers racing side by side down the course featuring two jumps and fields of bumps, known as moguls. While they are racing, being first down the course does not necessarily mean an athlete wins. A panel of seven judges evaluates skiers based on their technique in turning through the moguls, their aerial tricks and their speed down the course. Each judge focuses on one of those elements and has five points to award. The winner of each head-to-head advances through the bracket.
Italy's Federica Brignone storms into lead of women's giant slalom
It was all looking incredibly tight at the top of the leaderboard in this first run. That was until reigning world champion Federica Brignone came along. She's posted a time of 1:03.23 to take over the leader's chair. She has gone 0.74 seconds faster than anyone else so far.

Brignone is chasing her second medal of these Games, having won gold in the super-G on Thursday. The home crowd favorite is coming back from tearing her ACL and suffering a double leg break in April of last year, only returning to competition last month ahead of the Olympics.
Leaderboard tightly packed after top seven-ranked skiers take the course
The first seven skiers down the course this morning are the top ranked skiers in the FIS World Cup, and there isn't much to pick between them after their first runs.
All seven are separated by less than half a second, with Sara Hector and Thea Louise Stjernesund sharing the lead, having both posted a time of 1:03.97.
Mikaela Shiffrin sits in third, 0.28 seconds behind. Austria's Julia Scheib has been dominant in giant slalom on the World Cup circuit ahead of these Games and came into today as the gold-medal favorite. She is still very much in contention, sitting sixth so far, 0.39 seconds behind our leaders.
Mikaela Shiffrin safely down the mountain
It's a solid first run from Mikaela Shiffrin — she is down the course in 1:04.25. That puts her 0.28 seconds behind our leaders so far.

Sweden's Sara Hector, the defending gold medalist in this event, and Thea Louise Stjernesund, of Norway, posted exactly the same time at 1:03.97, which currently tops our leaderboard.

Shiffrin was perhaps a little conservative on that first run, but it's a decent foundation to build upon when the medals are decided later on.
Mikaela Shiffrin up early in women's giant slalom
The women's giant slalom is about to get underway on the Stelvio in Cortina.
Mikaela Shiffrin will be one of the early runners as the third competitor down this morning's first run. Paula Moltzan, who won bronze in the team combined event earlier in the Games alongside Jackie Wiles, is another American to watch out for.
A reminder, this event sees each athlete take two runs, with the course modified for the second run, which is at 7:30 a.m. ET. The times from the first and second runs are combined to give each competitor their overall time.
Mikaela Shiffrin looks to end her eight-year Olympic hex
Mikaela Shiffrin and the Olympic Games has not always been the smoothest of relationships.
There has been glory. Shiffrin won gold in her first two Olympics — in the slalom in Sochi in 2014 and in the giant slalom at PyeongChang 2018. But Beijing was an immense disappointment, with her going medalless in all six events and crashing three times after years of dominating the sport.
Shiffrin has not been on an Olympic podium in eight years, and there has already been disappointment at these Games. Teaming up with Breezy Johnson, her childhood friend, in the new team combined event, Shiffrin was handed the lead by Johnson, only to post the fourth-slowest time in the slalom portion of the event, which left the pair out of the medals.
The giant slalom today is the first of two opportunities for Shiffrin to end her Olympic medal drought — she is also scheduled to compete in the slalom on Wednesday. The giant slalom, however, does bring trauma back to Shiffrin. Leading the field as she chased her 100th World Cup victory in Killington, Vermont, in November 2024, Shiffrin crashed in her second run, suffering a puncture wound to her abdomen and muscle trauma. In the time since that crash, Shiffrin has spoken out about struggling with PTSD.
"I have an overwhelming sense of gratitude that I simply get to be here after everything," Shiffrin posted on X yesterday. "I'm proud of how far I've come. A little over a year ago, following my crash and injury in Killington, I couldn't even imagine skiing giant slalom at this level again, let alone starting in the discipline at the Olympics."
Victory today, after that Killington crash and her horror show in Beijing, would be quite the redemption story for Shiffrin.
Team USA faces Sweden as men's curling continues
Team USA's men's curlers are on the ice bright and early this morning as they take on defending gold medalists Sweden.
Yesterday, the U.S. team beat Germany 8-6 to move their round-robin record to two wins and two losses after four matches. Victory this morning over Sweden would really boost Team USA's hopes of making the playoffs and contending for a medal.
How Pinheiro Braathen won Brazil’s first-ever winter medal
Lucas Pinheiro Braathen’s gold medal representing Brazil in the men’s giant slalom represented the first medal of any color for any South American nation in the history of the Winter Olympics.
