Tension building as the best skaters give it their all

Because today's order of skaters placed the top scorers from Monday at the end, tension is mounting to see who will maintain the podium positions.

5-time medalist Scott Moir is coaching Team Canada and Team USA

Legendary ice dancer Scott Moir is pulling double duty coaching his native Team Canada — and also coaching for rivals on Team USA.

Canada’s Marie-Jade Lauriault and Romain le Gac, who are coached by Moir, are currently in first place. He sat beside them in a Team Canada jacket as they cheered and hugged as the judge's scores came in, but he'll soon swap to a Team USA jacket when Christina Carreira and Anthony Ponomarenko take the ice.

It's not uncommon for skaters from different countries to share coaches.

Team USA's Evan Bates and Madison Chock share coaches with France's Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron. Bates and Chock are just half a point behind the French duo, who won first in Monday's rhythm dance event.

The Olympic men’s hockey tournament is about to feature some politically charged faceoffs

On Saturday, the U.S. men’s team will play Denmark, a nation it is heavily favored to defeat in a preliminary matchup. But the intrigue for that game stems from what’s been taking place off the ice: President Donald Trump has spent months seeking to absorb Greenland, a Danish territory, into the U.S. against the wishes of the Danish government, sparking tensions between the U.S. and its NATO allies.

Then, it’s likely the U.S. will face Canada, a game that would pit two of the favorites to win gold in Milan against each other. It would also be the latest matchup between the squads amid Trump’s threats to force Canada to join the U.S., mocking it as the “51st state.”

Last year, the president’s administration held meetings with a separatist group in the Canadian province of Alberta that seeks to get a referendum on the ballot later this year to withdraw from the nation. And the president has recently said any budding relationship between Canada and China will lead to the death of hockey in Canada.

Trump’s threats aimed at Canada stretch back to the beginning of his second term and have already had an impact on the ice: Canada and the U.S. held heated matchups during last season’s 4 Nations Face-Off, in which Canada emerged victorious. The Canadian championship followed fans booing the American national anthem in Montreal during a U.S. vs. Canada matchup that preceded the title bout between the teams.

The U.S. is fielding one of its best rosters in recent memory as it seeks to win its first gold medal since 1980. The team is led by the Tkachuk and Hughes brothers, as well as Toronto Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews, among others.

Matthew Tkachuk, star of the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers, recently spoke for the team during a White House visit commemorating their title, their second in a row.

“The two Cups was pretty good, but that walk with you might’ve trumped it all,” Tkachuk told Trump. “That was pretty amazing. We’re so honored to be here. Being an American — I know I said it last year — but nothing beats this. I’m so proud to be an American and so proud to be here with you and everybody else.”

Slovakia wins first men's ice hockey game 4-1 against Finland

Slovakia defeated Finland 4-1 in the opening game of the Olympic men's ice hockey tournament today.

The team was already leading 3-1 in the third period when Adam Ruzicka, a former NHL forward who now plays in the Kontinental Hockey League, found the back of Finland's net with less than three minutes left in the game.

Slovakia was considered the underdog going into the preliminary game, as Finland won gold in men's hockey during the 2022 Beijing Olympics. The Finns also had roughly double the NHL experience on their roster in comparison.

The next men's hockey game will take place at 3:10 p.m. ET as Italy takes on Sweden in Milan.

U.S. speedskating star Jordan Stolz will go for his first Olympic medal today when he competes in the 1,000-meter event, which starts at 12:30 p.m. ET.

Stolz swept the 500-meter, 1,000-meter and 1,500-meter at world championships in 2023 and 2024 and was named the youngest male World Allround champion in 46 years. He set the world record in the 1,000-meter with a time of 1:05.37 in January 2024.

IOC ‘begs’ Ukraine’s skeleton racer to compete amid helmet controversy

The International Olympic Committee said it was begging Ukraine’s skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych to compete without wearing a helmet honoring athletes from his country who were killed during the war with Russia.

“We beg him, we want him to compete,” IOC spokesperson Mark Adams said in a news conference today when asked if Heraskevych will be disqualified from taking part in the Games if he wears the helmet again.

“I don’t think it is helpful in this situation to look at hypotheticals since we are trying to get him to take part,” he added.

Heraskevych has been fighting to compete in the helmet, which features images of the Ukrainian athletes who either died fighting or were killed in attacks. But Adams said yesterday that the helmet violated the Olympic Charter guidelines, something that Heraskevych disputes. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other country officials have strongly supported the athlete.

In a video on Instagram posted today, Heraskevych accused the IOC of “double standards” as he said Ukraine was demanding that the ban on his “helmet of remembrance” be lifted so he can compete in it later this week.

Why have NHL players missed the last two Olympics?

The men's ice hockey competition will get underway shortly, with defending gold medalists Finland taking on Slovakia, which means NHL players are about to return to the Olympic ice for the first time in 12 years, having missed the last two Games.

So why have the world's best hockey players missed the last two Olympics?

For the 2018 Olympics, NHL players were not permitted to travel after a series of disputes between the league and the International Olympic Committee. Since the 1998 Olympics, the IOC had covered the travel costs associated with getting NHL players to the Games and covered insurance, a deal it did not have across any other sports league, including the NBA.

"The IOC, which distributes 90 percent of its revenue for the development of sport in the world, obviously cannot treat a national commercial league better than not-for-profit International Sports Federations which are developing sport globally," the IOC said in a statement at the time.

For the NHL, it reached the conclusion that without a deal in place, the disruption caused by pausing the league during the Games was not worth it to its franchises.

With no NHL players to pick from, Team USA picked a squad composed of college players, failing to medal in PyeongChang.

It was meant to be different for the 2022 Games in Beijing. NHL players negotiated the right to appear in the 2022 and 2026 Games in their 2020 collective bargaining agreement with the NHL. The league went on to agree to a deal with the IOC and the International Ice Hockey Federation to solve the concerns of its franchises, though with a clause in place to allow the league to pull out should Covid cause delays to the NHL season. As the virus spiked again in the winter of 2021, more than 50 NHL games were postponed, and the league pulled out, saying it had to use the Winter Olympic break to get back on schedule.

The NHL players' CBA was extended in 2025, meaning we should also see NHL players take part in the 2030 Olympics in the French Alps.

Elizabeth Lemley and Jaelin Kauf's moguls medals, combined with Ryan Cochran-Siegle's silver earlier today in the men's super-G, see Team USA jump up the medal table.

The United States now has 10 medals overall in these Games, putting them third in terms of the total number of medals won. Team USA now holds three golds, five silvers and two bronze medals.

Lemley and Kauf in gold and silver ahead of final competitor

Elizabeth Lemley knew coming into this medal run the big improvement needed from her was her speed through the course, and she managed it, completing the course in 25.81 seconds. She also boosts her turn score, which lands her in gold medal position on her Olympic debut! A really strong score of 82.30 for Lemley.

Japan's Hinako Tomitaka follows Lemley down the course. She cannot beat Lemley's score.

Next is Jaelin Kauf. She's aggressive through the moguls, but she's a little bit slower through the course. That run from Kauf gives her provisional silver with a score of 80.77.

Team USA are guaranteed two medals, and only defending champion medalist Jakara Anthony can topple Lemley for gold. The Australian has been faultless throughout the competition — will she nail it here?

Kauf and Lemley progress to medal runs in women's moguls

Elizabeth Lemley shines off the jumps; she takes the highest aerial score of this first run, but she is a little slow time-wise. A score of 79.02 sees her qualify in fourth place.

But we are unfortunately losing two Americans. Olivia Giaccio is a little conservative off the jumps in her runs, which sees her lose points. Tess Johnson, who is back at the Olympic Games after going to PyeongChang 2018 as a 17-year-old before missing the team in 2022, is also out. The pair finished ninth and 10th.

We told you to keep an eye on Australia's Jakara Anthony. She glides through the moguls with ease and goes big off the jumps. She also goes quickest of all down the course, and all of that puts her top of the leaderboard with a score of 83.96, ahead of Jaelin Kauf's 80.13.

It will now be straight into the medal run for our eight remaining skiers. The scores are now all reset, and they have one chance to state their claim for gold.

Jaelin Kauf nails first run of finals to put herself top of the board

Jaelin Kauf is the first of the Americans to come to take on the moguls. She won silver in this event in Beijing four years ago, but an error in the first run on qualifying here means she's further down the running order than would have been expected.

Kauf carves through the turns with ease and time-wise, she has the fastest run so far at 24.96 seconds. She pumps the air with delight as she crosses the line, and a score of 80.13 puts her at the top of the leaderboard as the first athlete of these finals to clear the 80-mark. For perspective, somewhere in the mid-70s should be a good enough score to make it through, so we'll likely be seeing Kauf go for gold later on.

Outside of the Americans, watch out for Australia's Jakara Anthony, who was Australia's flagbearer at the opening ceremony. She pipped Kauf to gold in Beijing and has qualified for these finals as the top seed. Americans Elizabeth Lemley and Olivia Giaccio qualified second and third.

‘Only gold medalists’: The exclusive group chat — that’s growing larger by the day

We might have a winner for the most exclusive group chat ever.

The Associated Press took readers behind the scenes on the epic group chat called the “OGM chain,” which stands for “only gold medalists.” It’s made up of every U.S. figure skater who has ever won a gold medal in the Winter Olympics.

The list of members stretches back to Tenley Albright, the now-90-year-old who won gold in 1956.

Nathan Chen gained entry into the exclusive club when he won a pair of gold medals at the 2022 Beijing Olympics. He received a text right after claiming gold that read, “congratulations. Welcome to our chat,” the AP detailed.

Jaelin Kauf headlines Team USA's efforts in the women's moguls

Team USA has high hopes in the women's moguls, with the finals getting underway shortly.

Four Americans came through qualifying, with Jaelin Kauf, Tess Johnson, Olivia Giaccio and Elizabeth Lemley all hoping to contend for medals.

In this event, skiers head down a steep slope featuring large, uniform bumps, known as moguls, carving through them by quickly moving their knees and hips. Skiiers also perform tricks coming off two jumps — one near the top of the course and another further down.

The technique of the skier turns through the moguls makes up 60% of a skier's score. The tricks off the jumps make up another 20%, while the time they take through the course makes up the final 20% of a score. So it's all about balancing strong technique, big tricks and speed.

There is no room for error in the final. Each of the 20 skiers will take part in the first round, with only the top eight making it through to the final run. The scores then reset, and those eight skiers will get one run to try to take gold.

After decades of near misses, this 54-year-old curler finally reaches the Olympics

Rich Ruohonen swears his wife, daughter and son are okay with him saying that getting to throw one rock in the Olympic curling competition would be the greatest moment of his life.

“They’re not gonna be mad at me for saying it wasn’t my wedding day. We’ve been married a long, long time,” he said yesterday, one day before the men’s curling tournament begins in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy.

“I’ve been working at it (curling) my whole life. To get here means everything as well, but to get out and throw one rock, it’d be my dream."

Ruohonen, a 54-year-old personal injury lawyer from Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, is at his first Olympics as the alternate on the U.S. men’s curling team.

At trials, his teams finished fifth for the 2006 Torino Games, fourth for 2010, fourth for 2014, runner-up for 2018 and third for 2022

Ryan Cochran-Siegle recovers from brutal bout of food poisoning to win silver

It had been a rough couple of days for Ryan Cochran-Siegle. The Vermont native suffered from food poisoning, just about managing to battle it down enough to run in Saturday's downhill, before his beloved New England Patriots lost the Super Bowl on Sunday. Bouncing back from his illness, Cochran-Siegle managed to prove his 2022 silver was no fluke as he claimed 2nd again in the men's super-G.

"It's super emotional," Cochran-Siegle told NBC's Heather Cox when asked how it felt to come back from illness to claim silver. "[I] definitely had to fight some demons with the toilet before my run [in Saturday's downhill]. These past few days, just been trying to recover as best as possible.

"Honestly, coming into these Games, I was just so focused on the downhill, felt as though that was my opportunity."

As the third racer down the course, Cochran-Siegle faced a long wait to see whether he would earn a medal. He was happy with his time, fistpumping after crossing the finish line. And as the top-ranked skiers came down the course behind him, missing his benchmark time, it slowly started to dawn on the 33-year-old, particularly after legendary Swiss racer Marco Odermatt failed to go ahead of him, that a medal could be his.

"It was a slow wave," Cochran-Siegle said. "Now it's settling in a little bit, but I definitely can't believe it."

USA’s Jaelin Kauf qualifies for women’s moguls final

Jaelin Kauf finished second in the second round of women’s moguls qualification, nabbing a spot in the final. The 29-year-old landed a cork 720 for her top air jump, a part of the course that gave her trouble during yesterday’s qualification. An additional backflip mute grab earned her 77.18 points, enough to put her 12th in the overall qualification standings.

“Out of the top air, that was where things went a little wrong yesterday,” Kauf said. “Once I was in the middle, I felt good. It wasn’t the best run I’ve ever put down but got a top-to-bottom in and made it through (to) the final."

"Skiing the second qualification round wasn’t part of the plan, but once I was in, it was just coming out, trying to put a solid top-to-bottom through. Not trying to push or do anything crazy out here but just get a run down and get the Olympics started.”

With six World Cup moguls victories and an Olympic silver medal under her belt, Kauf is aiming for gold in this afternoon’s final.

Team USA's Ryan Cochran-Siegle wins super-G silver

Team USA's Ryan Cochran-Siegle knows how to turn it on for the big occasion. He has won silver in the men's super-G, claiming Team USA's third alpine ski medal of these Games.

It is Cochran-Siegle's second Olympic medal, having also taken silver in this event in Beijing in 2022. He splits two Swiss stars on the podium.

Franjo von Allmen's remarkable Olympics are continuing. He has become just the fourth skier to win three Olympic golds at the same Games, adding the super-G title to golds in downhill and the men's team combined. Marco Odermatt took bronze.

The Cochran family is an American skiing dynasty. Cochran-Siegle is one of six members of the family to have skied in the Olympic Games, and his mother, Barbara Ann Cochran, won gold in slalom in the 1972 Sapporo Games.

Chloe Kim gives statement performance in halfpipe qualifying; Mastro and Bea Kim also qualify

There were question marks over whether Chloe Kim could compete in these Games after tearing the labrum in her left shoulder in a training accident just over a month ago, but she looks as good as ever after topping qualifying in the women's halfpipe this morning.

Kim will look to go back-to-back-to-back and win a third consecutive halfpipe gold in tomorrow's final after comfortably topping the leaderboard in this morning's qualifying, and she will be joined by two of her Team USA teammates. Maddie Mastro has qualified in third, and Bea Kim has also progressed in 10th.

The women's halfpipe final is tomorrow at 1:30 p.m ET.

Big fall for China's Liu Jiayu as she's stretchered off the halfpipe

We're almost at the end of halfpipe qualifying and the competitors are really going for it. A reminder of how tough this sport can be, China’s Liu Jiayu has had a heavy fall and remained down on the snow.

She has just been stretchered away by medical personnel.

Chloe Kim goes big again on second run but doesn't improve

Chloe Kim goes for it on her second run and looks a level ahead of the rest of the field again. She doesn't improve on her first score, so we won't find out what that second run would have scored, but fair to say she is going to qualify top of the standings this morning.

Team USA's Bea Kim also doesn't improve on her second run. She currently sits 10th so she faces a nervy wait to see whether her first run is enough to see her finish in the top 12 to qualify for the final.

Mastro goes bigger to get over Beijing heartbreak; Schaffrick falls short

Maddie Mastro goes even better on her second run. A score of 86.00 puts her in third as it stands. She's emotional at the bottom of the course, having missed out on qualifying for the final in Beijing four years ago by one position. This means a lot to her.

After falling on her first attempt, Maddie Schaffrick lands a clean run, but a score of 61.75 means she comes up short and won't make it through. She is carrying a similar shoulder injury to Chloe Kim.

Elsewhere, Japan's Sara Shimizu also lands a big score after bailing on her first run. A score of 87.50 puts her in second. Lots of improvement so far in these second runs, but still no one can get close to Kim's huge score.

Men's Super-G underway as Switzerland looks for more alpine gold

We're now also underway with the men's super-G over on the famed Stelvio course in Cortina. This event combines the speed of downhill and the discipline of slalom.

Switzerland's Marco Odermatt comes in as the favorite. He's the reigning world champion in this event and the legendary skier will be looking to win his first gold medal of these Games, having finished 4th in the downhill and winning silver in the team combined. Teammate Franjo von Allmen is chasing his third gold medal of these Games.

Team USA's Ryan Cochran-Siegle took a surprise silver in this event in Beijing. He is one of the early runners here, and has set the benchmark at the top of the timesheets so far with a time of 1:25.45.

Each skier has one shot at glory, with the skier with the fastest time taking gold.

Chloe Kim leads the way with U.S. teammates also looking good

We're done with the first set of runs in the women's halfpipe qualifying. Chloe Kim leads the way with a score of 90.25, with Japan's Rise Kudo and South Korea's Gaon Choi a distance behind in second and third.

Chloe Kim

It has been a strong start for the American boarders. Maddie Mastro's run has her in fourth at this stage. Her 81.00 should be good enough to get her through. Bea Kim sits in 7th at this stage on 76.75. She will also be hoping to maintain a spot in the top 12 to make it to tomorrow's final.

Each rider will have one more go down the pipe. Maddy Schaffrick bailed on her first run, so she will need to nail it this time around to have a chance to advance.

Chloe Kim storms to the top of the leaderboard

The American, known by some as the Queen of Snowboarding, arrives at the Olympics and her spot in tomorrow's final is assured.

A score of 90.25 is a real statement — Kim is well ahead of the rest of the field at this point.

19-year-old Bea Kim, who is majoring in Climate and Sustainability at Columbia University, rounds off the first runs for the four Team USA competitors. She scores 76.75. A very promising run, she is sixth in the standings as it stands.

Maddie Mastro lands strong halfpipe qualifying run

Team USA's Maddie Mastro has landed a strong first run with a score of 81.00, which is good enough for third so far. The three-time Olympian narrowly missed out on qualifying for the halfpipe final in 2022, but that score should be more than good enough today.

Maddy Schaffrick, making her Olympic debut here at 31, bailed out of her run, so the pressure will be on for her second and final run.

Schaffrick has quite a story — turning pro at 14 before growing disillusioned with the sport at 21, quitting to become a plumber. She then returned as a coach, rediscovering her love of snowboarding before mounting a comeback to competition in 2024, bringing her to her Olympic debut today.

Our first look at Chloe Kim will be coming up shortly.

Women's snowboard halfpipe qualifying is underway

We're now underway in this morning's qualifying runs in the women's halfpipe in Livigno. It has been snowing overnight, and a very light flurry is still falling now.

Each athlete will get two runs on the halfpipe — a U-shaped slope with walls at least 22 feet high — in qualifying, with judges awarding scores for the flips, spins and aerial tricks they piece together on their runs. The best score for each rider counts, and the top 12 out of the 24 competitors advance to tomorrow's final.

Chloe Kim will be the 15th boarder down the pipe this morning.

We likely won't see her biggest tricks today — she will keep those in reserve for tomorrow — but she will still want to be top of the standings, as that would hand her the advantage of being last to go in the final. Three other boarders are competing for Team USA: Maddie Mastro and Olympic debutants Bea Kim — no relation to Chloe — and Maddy Schaffrick.

Chloe Kim to make Milan Cortina debut in halfpipe qualifying

Chloe Kim returns to the Olympic halfpipe this morning for qualifying as she begins her bid as she looks to defend her back-to-back Olympic titles and become the first snowboarder in history to win gold at three consecutive Olympic Games — a feat not even achieved by the legendary Shaun White.

Kim took a pre-planned two-year hiatus from the sport after Beijing. It took time for her to find her form, but she went on to dominate the second half of the 2024/25 season, winning the X Games title and a third world championship crown.

Her toughest competition looks to be South Korea's Gaon Choi, who broke Kim's record of being the youngest halfpipe champion at the X Games when she won it in Kim's absence at 14-years-old in 2023. This season, she has been in great form, winning all three events she has taken part in ahead of the Games. Team USA's Maddie Mastro is another to look out for.

Women's halfpipe qualifying gets underway in the next few minutes.

Chloe Kim affirms she's ready to go weeks on from shoulder injury

Team USA's Chloe Kim is a dominant force in women's halfpipe, taking gold in the last two Olympics, but her hopes of taking a historic three-peat almost went up in smoke last month after injuring her shoulder in a training crash in Switzerland.

Image: Around The Games - Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics: Day 3

Last month, Kim was in practice for the Laax Open, one of the biggest annual snowboarding events on the calendar, when she fell from the halfpipe, tearing the labrum in her left shoulder. Given the injury, Kim has not taken part in competition since December.

But Kim has overcome that setback. She couldn't snowboard for two weeks after her injury, so she used the downtime to vacation with her boyfriend, reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett.

The California native is confident she is ready to go in these Games, saying on Monday her shoulder was "feeling good" and that she would be wearing a heavily taped-up shoulder brace.

"In a funny way, it's made my riding better," Kim told a news conference. "I feel like I’m much more steady because I literally can’t move this arm as much as I normally would.

"I think once we’re in there, focusing on what we want to do, the tricks we want to do, [my] mind goes completely blank. I’m not thinking about my shoulder, just thinking about what I want to accomplish."

Stolz begins race toward history

Jordan Stolz takes to the ice for his first race of these Games in the men’s 1,000-meter. Stolz, 21, is considered the best speed skater in the world.

He made his Olympic debut in 2022 when he was the youngest male athlete on the U.S. team in Beijing.

While he did not medal at those Games, since then, Stolz swept the 500-meters, 1,000-meters and 1,500-meters at back-to-back world championships in 2023 and 2024, won the 2024 World Allround title, and has dominated on the World Cup stage.

Stolz is looking to join fellow Wisconsin-born speed skater Eric Heiden as the only American in any sport (man or woman) to win three or more gold medals at a single Winter Games.

When to watch

Chloe Kim makes her Milan Cortina debut this morning in halfpipe qualification, while later on generational speed skating talent Jordan Stolz goes for gold in the men's 1,000-meters speed skating. NHL stars also take to the ice as men’s hockey begins. There are eight medals to be handed out on day 5 of the Games.
