U.S. now padding lead against Latvia

The rout is on against Latvia after the U.S. makes it 5-1 early in the final period after a goal by Auston Matthews, who was in front of the net and had time to choose his shot after an entry pass by Jack Eichel.

This game was 1-1 only about 14 minutes ago, but since then, it's become an onslaught in only the second Olympic meeting between these countries.

Just like that, U.S. closes period strong with another goal

As the second period ends, the United States men's hockey team has scored yet again to lead Latvia, 4-1. This time, it was Brock Nelson's turn to score, his second goal of the game. Both Matthew Tkachuck and Jack Hughes have racked up two assists apiece so far.

After Nelson's latest goal, the scoreboard operator cut to a distraught Latvian fan who had his head in his hands, unable to look up at the ice, which drew some laughs in the stands.

Team USA hockey beginning to pull away

Standing in front of the Latvian goal, Tage Thompson took a pass and took a nifty shot over the goaltender's shoulder for a 3-1 U.S. lead with 2 minutes left in the second quarter here in south Milan.

After official reviews wiped away two previous U.S. goals, the United States has breathing room again.

This game has been one-sided — 23 shots for the U.S., twice as many as Latvia — everywhere but the official scoreboard.

Team USA women's curling falls to Sweden

Today's round-robin curling matchup between Team USA and Sweden resulted in a 9-4 loss for the American women's team.

The match was neck and neck for the first seven ends, until Sweden delivered stone after stone that the United States couldn't knock out.

Team USA missed a series of hit-and-roll shots, with one final short stone in the final end that sealed the deal.

The Netherlands’ Xandra Velzeboer won gold in the women’s 500-meter speedskating final, while her countryman Jens van 't Wout won gold in the men’s 1,000-meter in a thrilling photo finish.

At first period's end, U.S. and Latvia are tied

The U.S. scored three goals in the opening period. Only one counted.

Reviews requested by Latvia for offsides and goalie interference wiped off U.S. goals in the second half of the opening period. The U.S. has 15 shots to nine for Latvia.

2h ago / 3:41 PM EST

A Latvian challenge takes away a second U.S. goal

What we've learned in the first period of the U.S. men's hockey opener: The U.S. is good at scoring, but Latvia is even better at challenging.

For the second time, a U.S. score has been taken off the board after a challenge by Latvia; this time, it was a goaltender interference call that did in the U.S., and keeps this game a 1-1 tie.

2h ago / 3:33 PM EST

Latvia answers to tie U.S.

What a change in the energy in this arena. Thirty seconds after a 2-0 U.S. lead was reduced to 1-0 after an offsides penalty wiped out a goal, Latvia has answered with a goal of its own from Renars Krastenbergs for a 1-1 tie. Both teams have four shots so far.

3h ago / 3:25 PM EST

U.S. goal disallowed by offsides

Only 90 seconds after the U.S. scored its first goal, a beautiful setup by JT Miller led to a one-time goal from Quinn Hughes and a 2-0 U.S. lead with 13 minutes still to play in the opening period.

The goal stood for about 10 seconds.

Latvia challenged the goal for offsides, and officials determined the U.S. was, in fact, offsides, which takes the goal off the board. It's still 1-0 to the U.S.

Chloe Kim wins silver, not gold, in women's halfpipe final

Chloe Kim’s quest for a third straight Olympic gold medal fell just short at the women’s halfpipe final at Livigno Snow Park on Thursday. Kim led midway through the third and final run with a score of 88.00, but South Korea’s Gaon Choi earned a 90.25.

Kim had one more chance to top Choi but failed to complete her final run.

If Kim had secured gold, she would have been the first snowboarder — man or woman — to ever do it three consecutive times. U.S. snowboarding legend Shaun White has taken top honors in three different Olympics but not in a row.

Before the final, Kim said she was content with whatever happened.

“I’m just going to do what I came here to do, and if they decide to give it to me, then awesome,” she said earlier this week. “But I’m really just grateful to be in the position where I’ve won all these events multiple times. The fact that I’m able to be here and riding and being confident is all I can ask for.”

Chloe Kim pushed down to second place

South Korea’s Gaon Choi has overtaken U.S. star Chloe Kim after scoring a 90.25 on her third and final run in Thursday’s women’s halfpipe final.

In Choi's first run, she crashed when she hit the lip of the halfpipe. She stayed down on the ground for a few minutes, before getting up under her own power. As she waited for the score of her third run, a tear went down her face.

Kim will have one more attempt to best Choi.

Boy wishes U.S. men’s hockey team good luck in video

An 11-year-old boy penned a “hilarious” good-luck letter to Team USA forward Matthew Tkachuk.

Tkachuk read the letter in a video posted on X by USA Hockey. The boy, named Cambridge, wrote that his late dad loved the Florida Panthers, Tkachuk’s team that’s won the past two NHL titles.

“I know you have had a lot of great moments in your career, but in my opinion the best had to be the back-to-back Stanley Cup wins. That had to feel good, especially since your brother [Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk] has none,” read Tkachuk, who fought a losing battle against laughter. “Oh, that’s not nice — but that’s hilarious.”

Cambridge wished Tkachuk and Team USA good luck and said he hopes they win gold. Team USA’s Olympic opener is at 3:10 p.m. ET today against Latvia.

Tkachuk, the son of 538-goal scorer Keith, told the boy: “I will say, Cambridge, two Stanley Cups has been one of the greatest things that’s ever happened to me. But representing my country at the Olympics, I don’t know if there’s a greater honor in all of sports.”

U.S. assembles one of its oldest teams in Olympic history

This will be the 25th men's hockey team to represent the U.S. at a Winter Olympics, and with an average age of 28.4 years, it's also one of the oldest.

It's the sixth-oldest roster, to be exact, and is more than three years older by average age than the 2022 team. And yet age doesn't equal experience. Only two players, defensemen Brock Faber and Jake Sanderson, have ever played in an Olympics before, both in 2022.

U.S.-Latvia is third sellout of the day to begin men's hockey

I made my second trek to Santagiulia Arena tonight to watch the U.S. men's hockey team face Latvia, and a spirited atmosphere was present immediately after I stepped off a shuttle bus dropping off fans from a local metro stop.

As fans filed out of the arena from Canada's 5-0 win over Czechia, I saw a Canadian fan grab the hand of a fan in a maroon Latvia jersey and say loudly, "Beat the U.S.!"

The U.S. is attempting to win its first gold medal in 46 years, since the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" team.

Taylor Swift cheers on Breezy Johnson's engagement

Downhill champ Breezy Johnson will be leaving Italy with gold, gemstones and some kind, lyrical words from Taylor Swift.

When Johnson's partner proposed today, he gave her a note quoting the Swift song “The Alchemy”: “Honestly, who are we to fight the alchemy?”

Now, Swift has commented on Johnson's Instagram post about the engagement, congratulating her with another quote from the same song. "Where’s the trophy? He just comes running over to me,” Swift wrote.

Johnson responded to bread-obsessed Swift via IG, asking, "I don't know what's better Olympic gold or this comment. Sourdough engagement gift please????"

The gold medalist also said she "would love to teach you to ski."

The 14-time Grammy winner has had mixed results on the slopes. Swift appears to enjoy her time in the mountains of Montana.

But she also once famously wrote "remember when you hit the brakes too soon, 20 stitches in a hospital room” — in "Out of the Woods," widely believed to be about then-boyfriend Harry Styles crashing a snowmobile.

Vladyslav Heraskevych insists his 'memory helmet' didn't break any rules

After the IOC disqualified Ukrainian athlete Vladyslav Heraskevych from competing in the skeleton finals because he refused to give up his helmet, emblazoned with the faces of Ukrainian athletes who perished in the war with Russia, Heraskevych told NBC News he didn't break any rules.

“I believe I am right in this case,” Heraskevych told NBC News. “For me to back down is betraying [the people pictured on the helmet].”

Heraskevych said he is now talking to lawyers to “fight for our rights.” Even still, he said it would be a “miracle” to compete in Milan.

He told NBC News that he was already in the venue and had set up his sled for his race when he was notified he was being disqualified.

Heraskevych said finding out this morning that he would not be able to compete in the final was very emotional after he’d spent a lifetime preparing for that moment.

“I feel like I was treated unfairly. I was tripped out of opportunity to compete, and I don’t understand why.”

The photos on the helmet were of fellow athletes from Ukraine, some Olympians, some children, and some of his friends.

“Some things are more important, and I believe honoring and remember these athletes is now more important than medals,” Heraskevych said.

Canadian women win first curling match

Canada’s bid for a first women’s Olympic gold since 2014 began with a commanding 10-4 win today over Denmark in an opening round-robin match as the women’s curling competition kicked off.

Denmark put up a fight in the early stages of the game, but Rachel Homan’s Canada, the two-time world champions, set up five stones in the house in the fifth end and Danish skip Madeleine Dupont could only take out one.

The four-pointer gave Canada a 7-3 lead, and when it scored another three points in the seventh end, the Danes conceded.

“They’re a great team. We’ve had really good battles with them in the past,” Canada’s Tracy Fleury said.

Johnson’s boyfriend, Connor Watkins, proposed at the base of the super-G run in Cortina D’Ampezzo on Thursday and Johnson tearfully accepted.

Wearing a USA jacket, Watkins dropped to a knee in the finish area surrounded by skiers and competitors from other countries and raised a silver ring with a blue gem at its center. Johnson put a hand to her sunglasses while becoming visibly emotional. After saying yes, Watkins stood and kissed Johnson as U.S. teammates and officials cheered.

IOC president: Banning Ukrainian athlete over war dead tribute helmet is 'not about the messaging'

Kirsty Coventry, president of the International Olympic Committee, said today that banning a Ukrainian athlete from competing in the Milan Cortina Games over his insistence on wearing a helmet commemorating people killed in the Ukraine-Russia war was "not about the messaging."

Skeleton racer and Ukraine's flag bearer at these Games, Vladylsav Heraskevych, was told just 70 minutes before he was due to compete this morning that he would not be allowed to take part.

"No one — no one, especially me — is disagreeing with the messaging. The messaging is a powerful message. It’s a message of remembrance. It’s a message of memory," Coventry said in a statement.

"We have these rules in place to try and be fair, and also to try and allow for us to do both things: to allow for athletes to express themselves, but also to allow for athletes to be safe," she said.

The IOC added that while Heraskevych is not allowed to compete, he is allowed to stay at the Games while they are on.

‘Pommel Horse Guy’ hypes up curler Aidan Oldenburg

Stephen Nedoroscik, the Olympic bronze medalist who became known as “Pommel Horse Guy” during the 2024 Paris Games, cheered on U.S. curler Aidan Oldenburg in a new video.

“I find you to be such a cool, interesting dude,” Nedoroscik said in the video USA Curling posted to Instagram. “You juggle. I do the Rubik’s Cube. You wear a headband, which kind of started off as gag thing, like a joke. I wear these Rec Specs.”

Nedoroscik, 27, could sometimes be seen doing the Rubik’s Cube while waiting to compete. Oldenburg, 24, juggles or yo-yos, as NBC affiliate KARE of Minneapolis reported.

“You sound awesome, and I just want to wish you the absolute best of luck out there, and if you guys ever need a plus-one on your curling team, feel free to reach out,” Nedoroscik said.

In the video, Oldenburg said he’d trade Nedoroscik a gymnastics lesson for a curling lesson.

As USA Curling put it: It's "the crossover we all needed."

Jessie Diggins' best chance for medal today

In the women’s 10km freestyle, cross-country skier Jessie Diggins, who is competing in her fourth and final Olympics, has a chance to win her first individual gold. Diggins has won three Olympic medals in her career (one of each color), with her only gold coming in the team sprint at the 2018 PyeongChang Games.

Diggins has had a tough start to her Olympic campaign in Italy. She injured her ribs after crashing early in the skiathlon on Saturday (finishing eighth) and raced through the pain in the individual sprint, where she was eliminated in the quarterfinals.

Today’s race is considered her best chance to win a medal at these Games.

After the sprint on Tuesday, Diggins posted on Instagram, saying, “There’s no lasting injury here and it’s only temporary, and skiing won’t make it worse, so…onwards we go!”

4 Americans qualify for finals in men's moguls

Americans Charlie Mickel and Landon Wendler advanced to the men’s moguls final after finishing in the top 10 in the second round of qualification today in Livigno, Italy.

Mickel placed third, 13th in the overall qualification standings, after laying down a clean run for 77.82 points. Wendler followed in seventh, 17th overall, with a tighter run for 76.34 points.

“I knew I had a good score from the previous quali day,” Wendler told NBC. “I tried to up the degree of difficulty in my jumps. I haven’t done a cork 10 in a competition in probably two years, so it was good to get one under my belt before we head to finals and go for it.”

Nick Page and Dylan Walczyk had already qualified.

The finals begin later this morning at 6:10 a.m. ET.

Ukrainian star banned from wearing helmet tribute to war dead

A Ukrainian athlete has been disqualified from the Winter Olympics over his insistence on wearing a helmet honoring people killed in his country’s war with Russia.

The International Olympic Committee said in a statement this morning that skeleton racer Vladylsav Heraskevych, the Ukrainian flag bearer, was “not allowed to participate at Milano Cortina 2026 after refusing to adhere to the IOC athlete expression guidelines.”

The decision was announced shortly before Heraskevych was due to compete in the men’s skeleton competition, in which he was considered a legitimate medal contender.

“This is price of our dignity,” he said in a post on X shortly after meeting with the committee’s president, Kirsty Coventry. Heraskevych indicated he would appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
